This past Saturday May 8th, Dark Horse Fencing Club held it’s annual spring Battle of Spotsylvania Veterans Tournament. Their were fencers from Virginia, DC, Maryland, and North Carolina in attendance. The day started off with foil event which had 15 fencers including the defending champion Steve Gross, an A rated foilist from the Rockville Fencing Academy and Vet 50 US Veteran World Team member. By the end of the day Mr. Gross showed everyone again why he is on the World Team by successfully defending his title in the final bout against Richard Weiss, a C rated foilist from Rockville Fencing Academy. Dark Horses own Coach Ron Thornton finished third after losing to Mr. Gross in the semi-final round.
The second event of the day was sabre. This years champion was Garik Gutman from the Rockville Fencing Academy defeated Ron Thornton from Dark Horse fencing club in the final bout. Coach Tom Lauzon from Dark Horse finished in 6th place.
The final event of the day was epee which turned out to be a very strong A rated competition with A rated fencers such as Kaz Campe from DC Fencers Club, and Vet 50 and Vet 60 US Veteran World Team member, also Micheal Brooks an A rated fencer from Olde Towne Fencing Club. In the end though it was Steve Waller from Fairfax Fencers who won it all by defeating Mr. Campe in the semi-finals and then Mike Owen from Richmond Fencing Club in the final bout. Ron Thornton from Dark Horse finished in 8th place.
