Dark Horse Fencing – Fredericksburg, VA

The Richmond Tune-up Open was held at Richmond Fencing club on June 19 & 20, 2010. Fencers from Dark Horse Fencing Club competed in several events.

Alex Ortner and Bri Maurer competed in the Y-12 Foil event. Alex finished in 7th and Bri finished in 8th place.

Danny Strock was the only DHFC entrant in the Senior Mixed Epee Event. Danny finished in 6th place.

Coach Tom and his son Greg competed in the Senior Mixed Saber event. Greg won the Gold medal and Coach Tom brought home Bronze.

This past Saturday May 8th, Dark Horse Fencing Club held it’s annual spring Battle of Spotsylvania Veterans Tournament. Their were fencers from Virginia, DC, Maryland, and North Carolina in attendance. The day started off with foil event which had 15 fencers including the defending champion Steve Gross, an A rated foilist from the Rockville Fencing Academy and Vet 50 US Veteran World Team member. By the end of the day Mr. Gross showed everyone again why he is on the World Team by successfully defending his title in the final bout against Richard Weiss, a C rated foilist from Rockville Fencing Academy. Dark Horses own Coach Ron Thornton finished third after losing to Mr. Gross in the semi-final round.

The second event of the day was sabre. This years champion was Garik Gutman from the Rockville Fencing Academy defeated Ron Thornton from Dark Horse fencing club in the final bout. Coach Tom Lauzon from Dark Horse finished in 6th place.
The final event of the day was epee which turned out to be a very strong A rated competition with A rated fencers such as Kaz Campe from DC Fencers Club, and Vet 50 and Vet 60 US Veteran World Team member, also Micheal Brooks an A rated fencer from Olde Towne Fencing Club. In the end though it was Steve Waller from Fairfax Fencers who won it all by defeating Mr. Campe in the semi-finals and then Mike Owen from Richmond Fencing Club in the final bout. Ron Thornton from Dark Horse finished in 8th place.

NAC – C is being held in Pittsburg, PA from Dec 4 to 6, 2009.
Ron Thornton competed in the Div 1 Saber Event. There were 105 men competing in the Div 1 Saber Event. Coach Ron finished 92nd. Coach Ron also competed in the Veteran Combined Men’s Foil event. There were 63 competitors and Coach Ron finished 33rd.
Tom Lauzon was one of 23 competitors in the Veteran 50 Men’s Saber event. Coach Tom finished 19th. Coach Tom also competed in the Veteran Combined Saber event. There were 33 participants and Coach Tom finished 18th.
Congratulations to both coaches for a job well done.

Danny Strock brought home a silver medal in the D & Under Mixed Epee Event. In the final bout he fenced another D rated fencer Drew Meyer. The final score was a close 13-15.

Austin Jones finished in 5th place in the D & Under Mixed Saber event.

C & Under Foil

John Vivian finished third out of a field of 27 fencers at the Richmond Alphabet Fracas.

E & Under Foil
Two fencers from Dark Horse Fencing Club competed in the E & Under Foil event. Marco Gomez Wong finished in 5th place and Jean Lauzon finished 34th out of 36 fencers.

Saber
Tom Lauzon finished 10th and Laura Colon-Marrero finished 14th out of 21 fencers in the Saber event in Richmond.

Dark Horse Fencing Club was well represented on Sunday at the VA Div Junior and Cadet Championships. The Junior and Cadet events were qualifiers for the US Junior Olympics. Danny Strock took home a gold medal in Cadet U17 men’s Epee qualifying for US Junior Olympics.

In Y10 mixed foil Gavin Cornell took 8th, Ned Maurer took 6th and Chip Maurer took 5th.

Y12 Mixed Foil Kyle Raymond finished 6th and Bri Maurer finished 9th.

John Vivian won the Gold in Cadet (U17) Foil qualifying for Junior Olympics. Marco Gomez-Wong finished 16th.

Alex Bartlet and Austin Jones finished 3rd and 4th in Cadet (U17) Saber and 5th and 6th in U20 Saber.

John Vivian finished 9th in U20 Foil.

Several fencers from Dark Horse participated in the Steve Sobel ROC in Wayne, NJ this week-end. John Vivian and Coach Ron Thornton fenced in the Men’s Foil event. John finished 32nd and Ron finished in 44th place. Congratulations
